These family photos capture an American family of Southern Illinois a the turn of the last century. This is the Lewis family, and our grandparents Dollie and Ira Lewis are seen with their sons Paul, Ford, Samuel, Norman, Phillip, Alfred, and Murray. They represent a time gone by, of small farms and hardworking women and men; of privation and faith, of song and earth and stone. Singing are Ira and Dollie, captured by a Songcatcher from the Library of Congress on a wax cylinder in the early '30s.
